Do you work with clients outside the UK?

Friday 31 July 2026 · 4 min read · Rishi Gupta

Yes. I work with businesses in the UK and the United States, and the differences are not the ones I was warned about.

What actually differs

Not enthusiasm. What counts as evidence. US clients in my experience will move on a compelling direction; UK clients want to see it working, ideally somewhere that resembles them, before committing.

Neither is better, but they need different first conversations, and running the wrong one costs you the deal.

The practical things

  • Hours. Define when you are available and say so, rather than being unreliably reachable. A stated boundary is respected; an unreliable one is resented.
  • Currency. Agree which currency and who absorbs conversion before the first invoice.
  • Dates. "Let's circle back" means different things in different places. Always ask for a specific date.
  • Data location. Where the data lives may be a compliance question on one side and a preference on the other. Establish it early.

What does not change

A specific number about a specific problem lands identically everywhere. So does answering the phone.

Where I would say no

A time zone with no working-hours overlap at all. Not because it cannot be done, but because these projects need conversation, and conversation conducted entirely in overnight messages produces the wrong software slowly.

Got a version of this problem? Twenty minutes minimum, seven questions, and a one-page Bottleneck Blueprint within 48 hours. If it's not a fit, we'll say so.
